The armadillo got its name following an online poll

In the aftermath of 1.7 million people getting online to submit their votes, it has been agreed upon that the new mascot for the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil is to be named “Fuleco.”

Apparently, the name chosen for this rare armadillo is made up of two Portuguese words: “futebol” (i.e. football) and “ecologia” (i.e. ecology).

Needless to say, this means that the upcoming World Cup is to be about more than just sports: it will also focus on raising awareness with respect to environmental issues and conservation.

As previously reported, the armadillo chosen as the official mascot for this sporting competition is an endangered species, which needs all the help it can get in order to avoid becoming extinct in the not so distant future.

Hopefully, the FIFA 2012 World Cup will indeed help promote conservation and green-oriented behavior amongst football fanatics and ordinary folks.
