Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) RTM or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RTM by leveraging integrated media can cause Event ID 10 to be logged in the Application log.

Microsoft has confirmed this issue, but the company is emphasizing that there’s really nothing for customers to worry about, and advocates for an “out of sight, out of mind” approach.

According to the software giant, the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) error was introduced in the creation process of the Windows 7 SP1 DVD/ISO.

The error will appear in the Application log after each reboot of the computer – full details of the report are included below.

“There was an issue in the creation process that caused a WMI registration to remain in the DVD/ISO,” Microsoft explained.

“Since the registration is designed to work only during the DVD/ISO creation process, it fails to run on a live system and causes these events. These events are not indicative of any issue in the system and can be safely ignored.”

Windows 7 SP1 RTM and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RTM were released in February 2011, although according to the full build string of the upgrade it was compiled in late 2010.

Although the service pack did introduce some issues, it had for the most part been a problem-free rollout and upgrade for Windows 7 and its server equivalent.

Here are the details of the WMI error:

“Log Name - Application

Source - WMI

EventID - 10

Level - Error

User - N/A

OpCode - Info

Task Cat - None

Keywords - Classic

Details - Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.”

Those customers that cannot find it possible to ignore the error can take some measures to remove it as described in KB2545227.
