Amir Peretz, leader of the leftist Labor Party and Israeli Defense Minister, released an official statement on Tuesday stating that Israel is committed to a peace deal with the Palestinians before reaching any decision regarding the border with the West Bank.
"We will, as the prime minister has committed himself to doing, make a sincere, serious and real effort to reach a settlement with the Palestinians before any decision to start the convergence plan unilaterally", he said, highlighting the fact that Israel will retreat its troops out of the Palestinian territories as quickly as it is politically possible.
The statement was publicly made today on Israel Radio station, following a statement made by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas yesterday, who warned Israel that unilateral moves will undoubtedly lead to extremist clashes in the Palestinian territories.
"Let's make this year the year of peace, let's sit at the negotiations table away from the policy of diktats and unilateralism. Stop making excuses that there's no Palestinian partner, the partner is there", had previously stated Abbas, saying the Palestinians, including Hamas, are ready to make peace.
In an effort to maintain its peace pledges, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will pay an official visit to the White House on May 23rd in order to seek American help in removing the last remnants of Jewish settlements in order to be able to mark a final border with Palestinian land.
