Xiaomi is one of the fasted growing mobile device makers of the last few years, but since its inception the company has been focusing exclusively on the Asian market.

Lots of people are hoping Xiaomi will branch out into the international market to lands like Europe or the US, but it appears the Redmi maker is playing it safe for the time being.

In a recent interview Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra admitted that it would take a few years for the Chinese device maker to able to officially bring in models to the territories mentioned above. Talking about America, he explains the market there is “extremely competitive” and Xiaomi doesn't yet feel ready to tackle it.

But is it possible that Barra was trying to throw everyone off track? Maybe. Let us explain.

Xiaomi has something to share and wants to tell us about it in San Francisco

According to sources familiar with the matter talking to Android Headlines, Xiaomi is gearing up to hold a press event on February 12 in San Francisco, California.

To add more fire to the whole rumor, the company’s co-founder, Li Bin has been spotted posting an image riddled with hidden meanings on his Weibo page. The pic depicted Xiaomi’s international team and announces the company has some news about an unidentified international expansion.

At this moment, you need to take this piece of information with a grain of salt. But if the rumor turns out to be true, it might have great implications.

The fact that the event takes place in the US is quite telling that Xiaomi is looking to take up residence in the country one way or another.

A few days ago we were telling you Chinese device maker OnePlus announced it was opening an R&D center in Europe, while inviting let-go Sony employees from the smartphone division to join its ranks in a quest to “never settle.”

Maybe Xiaomi is taking a different route and will be announcing its plans to open an R&D facility in the States.

Although, it would be much more exciting if the device maker announces official availability of its products stateside. Especially since Xiaomi just launched two new impressive handsets, the Mi Note and Mi Note Pro.

For the time being all we can do is wait, but in a few days we’ll finally know if this is the case or not.
