Is Sony PS 2 the Secret Weapon of PS3 Against Xbox 360?

Citing a source from the retail industry, SPONG launches the hypothesis that Sony will try to counteract the launching of Xbox 360 in November by cutting the price on its current console, Play Station 2.

According to sources cited by SPONG, it’s possible that Sony will go as far as to cut 60 pounds for the British market and 100 dollars for the US market.

Moreover, SPONG says that Nintendo will join the console war by launching new titles for the market.
Since the price for Xbox 360 will be around $300 (or at least that’s what the rumors say), then it means that the PS2 will be three times cheaper, if indeed, the company will apply the promised cut.

On the other hand, since we are dealing with the holiday season, it’s possible that Sony’s announcement might have nothing to with the launching of Xbox 360 and, in any case, it’s hard to believe that this will determine consumers to forget about the new console over one whose days are numbered.

And this is not the only rumor which might dig up the hatchet of war between Xbox 360 and PS3. Analysts at Wedbush Morgan consider that if Xbox 360 doesn’t have the expected success, Sony might have to move the launching of the Play Station 3 from the spring of 2006, to the same season of 2007.

Why would Wedbush Morgan make such a prediction? Who says that spring is the best time to launch consoles? Why not the fall or winter of 2006?

If Sony postpones for another year (which means a lot in the gaming world) the launching of the Play Station 3, the new console might not interest many people because it would be too old.

The idea that Sony is waiting to see what impact will Xbox 360 have and only after that, it will release Play Station 3 from the cage is another strange concept. It’s possible that Sony will adapt its marketing strategy and offer by speculating on Xbox 360’s problems, but that’s it; let’s not go overboard with this.

Regardless of what happens, the spring and summer of 2006 will be hot for the world of consoles.
