(Imagine the Godfather theme song playing or if you have it at hand, actually play it)
Luca Brasi: 'I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your daughter's wedding...on the day of your daughter's wedding. And may their first child
be a masculine child'. It's a line from the original 1972 Godfather movie starring Marlon Brando. The actor delivering the line was actually a real life mobster.
The connection to Google is that one of its own Godfathers, Gokul Rajaram, responsible for AdSense and by that for part of the Mountain View's wealth is going to retire to go and do his own thing. The "daughter's wedding" in the line could be compared to the time of celebration over at Google's Headquarters now that its stock has exceeded 700$ per unit and the "masculine child" would be the very own AdSense.
That would make the line to be translated as "I am honored and grateful that you have given me the opportunity to be here and I hope that what I leave behind will prove to be even better than it was so far." At least that's how I see it.
Fortune paraphrases Rajaram's motives for departing: "He said he misses working on a small team and he hopes to recreate the startup environment when he launches his own company." The departure was decided and pursued on friendly terms on both sides but it looks like there's a trend of leaving the big corporations and going independent; Vanessa Fox is another example for Google, or the long line of Yahoo! head staff quitting and going somewhere else or pursuing their own entrepreneurial ideas with Andy Baio, the "Upcoming" event planning site that struck rich with Yahoo! purchasing it as the last one to do so.
