Woody Allen films are of the either-you-hate-them-or-you-love-them variety, so if you fall in the latter category, this one is for you. Embedded below is the first official trailer for “Irrational Man,” starring Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix as leads.

For some reason, Allen strove to keep details of the plot a secret until just now, even admitting in an interview that not even the stars knew the direction in which the story was going, being offered a limited number of script pages at a time.

This trailer doesn’t promise anything groundbreaking or excessively fresh in terms of plot, but it allows a good look at Stone and Phoenix’s performances.

He plays a jaded philosophy professor who has lost all meaning in life, and she is one of his new students. Emma Stone being Emma Stone, she plays a quirky and lively character, the kind that can bring a smile to your face with a single word or even a look.

Some sort of romance, albeit only hinted at and only emotional, starts between the two, bringing the good professor out of his depression. Parker Posey plays his girlfriend, who also happens to be the first one to notice this change for the better in him.

You can tell from the trailer that no footage from the film’s third act is included, so that leaves the door open to some kind of twist that would explain the secrecy around the plot.

“Irrational Man” will open at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and will then roll into US theaters in July. Does it look like something you’d buy a ticket to see?
