Smaller companies are taken over by bigger ones all the time. It's the law of nature. They get assimilated in the large enterprise, and, while they lose most of their personality and identity, they gain the financial support to further fund their existence. But, sometimes, there's too much life in the little guys to just lay down and accept borg-ification. One developer studio that's gotten too much spunk to become just another cog in an endless money machine is “2K Boston (formerly Irrational Games.)”

After releasing the very well received System Shock 2, which became a landmark in gaming history, and later on Freedom Force and SWAT 4, Irrational Games was eventually purchased by Take-Two interactive in 2006, under the 2K publishing arm. In 2007, the studio was renamed 2K Boston, as it released its BioShock. But ever since the name change came, every time the studio's name would be used, the “formerly Irrational Games” phrase would always accompany it.

As such, the studio has decided that it's time to go back to its original name. Once Irrational Games, then 2K Boston, the studio is once again Irrational, and it plans to do more than just put on its former clothes. To reward the fans that felt it was so paramount that the developer would not lose its heritage, as they continued to remind everyone of its past achievements, the studio has a history lesson in game culture prepared for all loyalists out there, and the newly put-up irrationalgames.com site will soon have something very special for us.

While it's just a countdown timer right now, the site promises to reveal a lot of secrets about its previous releases. With behind-the-scenes stories and “never before seen tidbits,” Irrational Games plans to take us down memory lane, and give us an in-depth view of titles such as BioShock, Freedom Force, and System Shock 2. If time flows in our world the same way it does in Irrational-planet, then the site should have something for us, this time-plus-seven-hours tomorrow.
