Ken Levine, the leader of Irrational Games, explains the reason why his team did not create BioShock 2 by saying that the company has never been able to handle direct sequels and is always looking for a new challenge to tackle.

During a Question & Answer session with BAFTA, the designer says that, “That's not an aspersion on BioShock 2, I think the team did a great job with it.”

He adds, “But for us, that would have been repeating what we had done in a lot of ways. It would have been easier for us. And that's why we didn't want to do it.”

The first BioShock impressed with both its gameplay, which combined traditional shooting with player powers, and its setting, the underwater city of Rapture.

The second game used the same universe but slightly different areas, while Infinite will take players up to the sky, in the floating city of Columbia.

The new BioShock launches on March 26 on the PC and on home consoles.
