Researchers find that pregnant women should take iron supplements

A team of researchers in Britain and in the US says that women expecting a child should not think twice about taking iron supplements during their pregnancy months.

This is because women who do so have been documented to give birth to bigger, healthier babies.

Sources say that, as far as the researchers can tell, iron supplements up an infant's birth weight when taken in daily doses of at least 66mg.

Apart from their helping the baby develop, such iron supplements are said to significantly lower a mother's risk of developing anemia and up her hemoglobin levels.

“Our findings suggest that use of iron in women during pregnancy may be used as a preventive strategy to improve maternal haematological status and birth weight,” the researchers say.

Naturally, mothers-to-be would do best to consult a specialist before starting to take iron supplements.
