Director Shane Black makes Iron Man cool again, gives franchise a much needed boost

I will start this by saying that I’m a geek at heart. I love (almost all) movies based on comic books, I love robots, and I love Robert Downey Jr. in whatever role he chooses, no matter how small. In other words, I was pre-programmed to love “Iron Man 3.”

Even so, it still managed to surprise me.

Trying to be objective is part of my job, so I will objectively say that “Iron Man 2” fell short of many expectations because it had too much potential and it squandered it away.

This new installment doesn’t make the same mistake and it’s writer / director Shane Black that fans have to thank to for it.

The strong cast and a huge budget for special effects do the rest.

“Iron Man 3” is closer to the feel of a comic book than either of the previous two installments or any other Marvel film. At the same time, it’s a standalone production, in the sense that you don’t perceive it as a lead-in for another release.

It’s Tony Stark’s story of finding his real identity, of learning what’s really important by coming incredibly close to losing it all. It’s also very funny and smart, action-packed but introspective in (essential) places, but also very surprising.

“Iron Man 3” is the perfect film to kick off the blockbuster summer, it’s a superhero flick that every other superhero flick should aspire to.

What I Liked

… Pretty much everything about “Iron Man 3.” Brimming with witty or downright hilarious one-liners, with plenty of action but also more “serious” moments, this is a film that best embodies the concept of “entertainment.” It’s never dull or redundant, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously either.

Shane Black changed Iron Man and, believe it or not, it’s a change for the better.

When RDJ decides he’s done with the Iron Man, it will be hard to imagine any other actor playing the part.

What I Didn’t Like

Post-converting movies to 3D is a sure way of boosting revenue from ticket sales but, in the case of “Iron Man 3,” I could have done without it. It’s not particularly bad or anything, but it’s not exactly eye-popping either.

Conclusions

“Iron Man 3” is a gorgeous superhero film that stands out from the rest for great acting, a good story, good FX, and more epicness than you would ever think of seeing on just one screen in one film. Especially if you’re a fan, don’t miss it.

Also, make sure you stick until the end of the credits for a little surprise. You know how Marvel loves those Easter Eggs, right?
