And PS2 exclusives still exist...

Since some solid rumors regarding a price drop for Sony's PS2 video console to $99 were heard this week, people could get the false impression that the PlayStation 2 is dead. Well... they couldn't be wronger than that - the PS2 is alive and doing great. Actually, following this newest release from Southpeak, it seems that it also tries to be as fit as possible. And, considering its age, it's a really nice thing to do.

Iridium Runners is a high-intensity on-foot racing title developed by Playstos Entertainment where your main objective is running. Actually a racing game without cars, the game comes with the very interesting story of a future where cars have been made obsolete by some scientific discoveries that made humans achieve a supernatural speed, on-foot. And since they still feel the need for speed, they start the show, for our delight.

"Iridium Runners is the perfect racing game for gamers looking for something different," said Luca Da Rios, CEO and executive producer, Playstos Entertainment. "Behind its cartoon style and futuristic setting hides a deep and challenging racing title that can be both fun to pick up and play, as well as demanding enough to play for hours on end."

Having in mind that no cars are involved, there are a bunch of new possibilities available during the race, which becomes a more peaceful (probably) kind of Destruction Derby, to name a classic. This means that, no matter which of the 20 available characters you will pick, you will be able to catch up with your opponents, push them, attack them and knock them over in order to gain an advantage and win the race. There are 8 available sidekicks, each with its own pro's and con's.

Iridium Runners comes with several game modes, including the classic Championships or single races as well as split screen multiplayer. An interesting idea comes with the implementation of a team mode, which allows two paired teammates to race and battle one another throughout the tracks. Unfortunately, we have no idea how many tracks will be available to us and our caricature-like characters.

Iridium Runners, rated E for Everyone is already available for purchase as a PlayStation 2 exclusive.
