A group of Iranian hacktivists calling themselves the Iranian Cyber Army (Ir.CA) have defaced the Voice of America website, as well as 93 other domains, yesterday.

The rogue landing page on www.voanews.com and all the other websites displayed the Ir.CA logo, which contains the Iranian flag, and a political message reading:

"Mrs. Clinton Do you want to hear the voice of the oppressed nations will from heart of USA? Islamic world doesn’t believe USA trickery. We call on you to stop interfering in Islamic countries."

Voice of America (VOA) is the official international radio and TV broadcasting service of the US government. It broadcasts in over forty languages by satellite, FM and AM.

Online streaming is also available from VOANews.com and affiliate websites. The Tech Herald reports that most of the 94 domains defaced by Ir.CA were related to VOA.

These include voanews.net, voanews.org, voanews.info, voahp.com, voanews.us, and many others, all registered at Network Solutions and using one of its subsidiaries for DNS services.

In the past, the Iranian Cyber Army managed to hijack Twitter's domain name and point it, for a short period of time, to a page set up by the group.

The attack was reportedly performed by obtaining access to Twitter's registar account and altering the domain's NS records.

Another high-profile defacement performed by Ir.CA involved Baidu.com, China's largest search engine. The Baidu attack lasted for a longer period of time because of miscommunication between the company's employees and those at its domain registrar.

The Chinese Internet giant later sued Register.com for gross negligence, revealing that one of the registrar's employees handed over its account to a person who failed to pass the normal verification process.

Ir.CA's history of DNS tampering makes it likely the same attack vector was used in this attack, although, at this time, there is no confirmation in this respect.
