Iogear Launches a Wireless USB Hub and Adapter

- Connecting three computers and four USB devices

By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor

Iogear announced the official launch of a new Wireless USB Hub and Adapter Kit which enables up to three computers to connect with several USB devices like printers, scanners, network attached storage drives and media players, at speeds reaching 480Mb per second. As an additional claim over the quality of this product, the manufacturing company says this is the very first wireless USB implementation which is certified
by both FCC and the USB Implementer's Forum (USB-IF for short).

The system is USB 2.0 compliant as well as backward compatible with the older 1.1 version of the USB standard and it can operate with devices that are found on a 10 meter radius, being scaled to accommodate a small office. Operating system support includes drivers for Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista. Unfortunately, the manufacturing company did not include support of Mac and Linux users. As the Iogear designed the Wireless USB Hub and Adapter Kit to be used with laptops and other mobile computing devices, the device can go in a lower power state when it is not needed in order to save energy. The wireless USB hub from Iogear is using the larger UWB spectrum to receive and transmit data and this translates into speeds almost ten times greater than the regular wireless 802.11b standard. The use of the UWB standard also helps reduce interferences with other active wireless devices for seamless connectivity.

"We are proud to be the first to bring a Certified W-USB solution to consumer and SOHO markets," said Iogear sales and marketing VP Miranda Su, in a statement cited by the news site digitaltrends. "Following a thorough development process, we are launching a product that eliminates excess wiring in the home and at the office, without compromising transfer speeds and productivity. Through collaboration with our partners, we are also ensuring individuals can use Iogear's Wireless USB Hub & Adapter Kit with any future certified products." The Wireless USB Hub and Adapter Kit is already available for purchase and it comes at a price tag of $199.95.
