There are some brands of mineral water out there that offer consumers the choice of drinking fizzy water with a taste of fruit. Choices are varied and include anything from strawberry and apple to mango and passion fruit.

But what if you could get that fizzy, fruity taste in your mouth just by sticking your teeth into a fruit? Well, it turns out that thanks to good old science, you can do exactly that.

Lubera creates the first fizzy apple breed

Swiss fruit company Lubera has announced that it has developed a new variety of apple that fizzes in your mouth while you are busy munching on it. The new type of fruit is called Paradis Sparkling and you’ll be able to find it on the market as soon as next year, reports Gizmodo.

However, if you want to grow some in your back garden, you can purchase a three that will eventually make fizzy apples right now.

It has taken scientists working for Lubera more than eight years to perfect this new type of apple which is the result of breeding between two existing varieties of apples. The first one is called Resi and is of the sweet-tasting kind from East Germany.

Amusingly, the fizzy apple was a result of an accidental cross-bred between Resi and another type called Pirouette. All this happened in the Lubera orchard and the results stunned tasters.

The apples aren't that pretty to look at

According to a company official, one of the production managers noticed a bunch of ugly apples growing in a cross-bred tree back in 2006. They didn’t really look too appealing to the eye but he decided to try one nevertheless. It turned out that he loved their taste.

He describes the whole experience as involving big, big cells and very firm cell walls that are just exploding juice into the mouth.

On top of being effervescent, the yellow flesh of the Paradis Sparkling also tastes sour, sweet and tangy. However, there’s a downside to this taste extravaganza – the apples grow in irregular sizes and colors, which might not make them look so aesthetically pleasing.

This is the reason Lubera doesn’t believe that Paradis Sparkling will really take off as a commercial fruit, so the new fruit is actually targeted at individual farmers and growers who want an atypical breed in their gardens or orchards.

As we told you before, interested parties can already order a tree, which sells for $55 / €43.
