14 DAY TRIAL // Today, we have the great pleasure of introducing you to the first ever openSUSE Live CD built around the MATE desktop environment, as it looks like the openSUSE team plans on delivering a MATE flavor as well, after Ubuntu got its own.
While the latest version of the traditional and low on resources MATE desktop environment is available for all OpenSuSE Linux users in the default software repositories of the distribution, it appears that there's no Live CD with the MATE desktop based on openSUSE.
We took the openSUSE MATE Live CD for a spin to see what it looks like and to create a screenshot tour for your viewing pleasure, which you can see at the end of the article. It is based on the openSUSE 13.2 (Harlequin) operating system and powered by the Linux kernel 3.16.7.
Please note that this is the first ever version of the openSUSE MATE Live CD, which means that it is not finished. For example, there's no wallpaper during the boot and after installation, and it does not contain the tools includes in other official openSUSE flavors.
The openSUSE MATE Live CD includes only a few applications
Being the first release, the openSUSE MATE Live CD comes only with a few applications pre-installed, among which we can mention the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Transmission torrent downloader, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, and Brasero CD/DVD burning software.
Besides the standard MATE components and apps, the openSUSE MATE Live CD contains the Midnight Commander command-line file manager in the style of Norton Commander, XTerm terminal emulator, Snd sound editor, Gparted partition editor, and openSUSE's YaST control center.
Download openSUSE MATE Live CD 0.0.1 right now from the openSUSE Studio website, where you will have to create a free account or login with one of the supported services.
