The Ubuntu Recoll Lens is an amazing Unity Launcher plugin that uses the Recoll full text search tool to easily search text in local documents. It also has support for embedded documents.

You will be able to filter the results by Text, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Media, Message, and Other.

To install the Unity Recoll Lens plugin in your Ubuntu operating system, open a terminal window (hit the CTRL+ALT+T key combination) and paste the following commands (one by one, hitting Enter after each one):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:recoll-backports/recoll-1.15-on sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y recoll-lens recoll

You will also need to restart your session after the installation. Keep in mind that you will have to run the Recoll tool and index your files before you can use the Unity Lens!

This is only availalbe for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin), Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) and Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).
