Introducing PCLinuxOS Business Edition

- A Linux for businesses!

By: Marius Nestor, Linux Editor

PCLinuxOS (also known as PCLOS) is an installable Live CD distribution based on the Mandriva Linux operating system. While PCLinuxOS tries to be a very elegant Linux desktop, its main aim is to be easy to use by everyone who dares to try a Linux distribution. Looking back in time (a few years ago), PCLinuxOS project was started as a set of RPM packages created to improve Mandriva Linux distros (Mandrake was called at that time) and Texstar is responsible for the PCLinuxOS Linux distribution, which was created in 2003 as a fork of the Mandrake Linux 9.2.

Today, we will introduce you to a business edition of the PCLinuxOS Linux operating system, which tries to offer complex solutions for different business needs. The PCLOS Business Edition comes as a Desktop (SOHO) solution that offers everything a one-man shop/business needs and as a Server solution which is perfect for businesses with a few computers in their network. "Both Desktop and Server are made with working together in mind. Desktop is a great "client" for connecting to the many server and networking functions available on the BE Server.", the PCLOS developers stated.

However, PCLinuxOS is a new project and it's still in heavy development stage, therefore only the Server solution was made available until now,
which contains the following server applications:

• Apache (web server)
• BIND (DNS server)
• CUPS (print server)
• DHCP (DHCP server)
• Kerberos 5 (network authentication server)
• NFS (network file server)
• OpenLDAP (LDAP server)
• OpenSSL (certificate management tool)
• Postfix (email server)
• PostgreSQL (database server)
• MySQL (database server)
• proFTPd (FTP server)
• Samba (samba file server)
• Squid (proxy server)
• TightVNC (vnc server)
• Webmin (browser-based network / server / system administrator)
• YPserv (nis server)

and other useful software such as:

• Mozilla Firefox (web browser)
• Clam AV (anti-virus software)
• SpamAssassin (spam filter)
• K3B (CD/DVD burning tool)
• KTorrent (bittorrent client)
• SmartMontTools (smart disk monitoring software)
• Smb4k (smb browser)
• and more...
