Chromixium is a new distribution of Linux based on the upstream Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system, built around the Chromium web browser, and designed from the ground up to look and act like the Chrome OS operating system created by Google.

Chromixium has been in Beta since February 2015, but it was recently promoted to the Release Candidate stage of its development cycle, which means that the final Chromixium 1.0 release is around the corner.

Powered by a Linux kernel 3.13 LTS (Long Term Support), Chromixium boasts the latest version of the Chromium web browser with the Pepperflash plugin for viewing multimedia content designed in Adobe's Flash technology.

The desktop environment used in Chromixium is a highly customized version of the well-known Openbox window manager, using the Compton desktop compositor, the Plank dock (application launcher), and the LXPanel from the LXDE desktop environment as the main taskbar.

An Ubuntu Linux operating system that looks like Chrome OS

The design aim of the new Chromixium operating system is to look identical with Google's Chrome OS. As you can see from the attached screenshot, the developers managed to achieve quite a perfect Chrome OS clone.

Best of all, all applications use the next-generation GTK+ 3 toolkit, in order to provide users with a modern and consistent look and feel. As expected, most of the pre-installed applications and core components are from the upstream Ubuntu operating system.

Unfortunately, there's no news when the final Chromixium 1.0 will be released, but you can download Chromixium 1.0 Release Candidate right now from Softpedia. Keep in mind, though, that the operating system is still in development, and it is not recommended to be installed on production machines.
