At the 22nd African Regional Conference of Interpol that took place recently in Oran, Algeria, Interpol’s President Mireille Ballestrazzi noted that the agency fully supported the creation of Afripol.

The idea of an African organization of criminal police is “feasible,” Ballestrazzi said, cited by the Algeria Press Service.

“African countries have common concerns of crime and initiatives of this kind can only be beneficial in terms of cooperation and the fight against the various evils,” the Interpol president commented.

As far as cybercrime is concerned, Ballestrazzi said she was confident that Algeria had what it takes to fight such crimes.

The statement comes in light of numerous warnings by security companies regarding Africa’s becoming a safe haven for cybercriminals.

170 senior law enforcement officials from 44 countries and 10 international organizations attended the Interpol African Regional Conference.
