Video game publisher Interplay is the new owner of the Freespace franchise, after acquiring it from developer Volition and publisher THQ for a sum of just 7,500 dollars (5,600 Euro).

The series was sold after THQ entered the bankruptcy process, according to Gamasutra.

The first and second Freespace titles are some of the best-known and highly praised space simulation titles.

Interplay currently has no titles officially announced as being in development, but the publisher might make an announcement about Freespace soon.

The first two games are available via digital distribution.

A number of modders have also remade the entire experience, bringing improvements to graphics and gameplay.

The space sim genre has seen a big decline since Freespace was launched.

At the moment, Volition is working on the Saints Row series, which will get its fourth full game in August.
