Even in the context of the global economic downturn there are still areas that create jobs and that bring a breath of fresh air to the economy. We are of course talking about the Internet, a segment that creates millions of jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity. All this could be considered strictly speculation but a new study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau comes to confirm it.

The Internet industry produces 3.1 million American jobs and $300 billion in economic activity, which is a lot and even better considering the troubled economical situation that America is confronting. Professors Deighton and Quelch stated that the web "has created unprecedented opportunities for growth among small businesses and individual entrepreneurs."

The Internet has the big advantage of offering entrepreneurs the possibility to connect to customers worldwide and thus creating an open market that can generate a huge turnover and profits. It is also one of the most important sources of information, and it has proven its role in what concerns economy over and over again. A very valuable part in the Internet’s importance is the web advertising, which is responsible for making even the more obscure entrepreneurs known worldwide.

For the supporters of the Internet and its benefits for the economy IAB has announced the launch of the Long Tail Alliance. This will basically be a group of online businesses that will try to teach policymakers about how important online advertising can be. Also this alliance will try to protect this industry from the restrictions that can fence its activity. Some of the members of this alliance stated their point in front of the Congress in the hope that their story would help the growth of the Internet industry.

It is hoped that the Members of the Congress will listen to what groups like Long Tail Alliance or Google Small Business Network have to say and understand the importance of the Internet in the economy as well as the growth that it brings to a country's economy.
