According to Internet analyst companies, Mozilla continues to erode Microsoft's position on the browser market, not only in the United States but also globally. While Internet Explorer version 7 is still
the preferred browser world wide, Firefox is slowly burning its way up toward Microsoft's application showing an overall ascendant trend that has building up its momentum for a couple of years. The same context does not apply to IE which has been slowly losing ground with an average of 0.5 to 1% on a monthly basis. This translates in the displacements of IE's market shares in the favor of Firefox.
Both Net Applications and OneStat, advanced website statistics and analysis firms have issued similar metrics comparing the audience ratings of the two browsers. According to Net Applications, IE is down to 83.6% in July from 85.3% in January, this representing another milestone of erosion as at the middle of 2005 IE owned 87.23% of the global browser market. While Internet Explorer's dominance dropped almost 4% in a single year, Firefox virtually exploded from an inferior position to Netscape and Safari in 2005 to the second place in consumer preferences. Firefox was credited with less than 1% of the browser market in 2005, and it grew in a single year to a massive 12.93% while Safari, Opera and Netscape are stagnant. While the global growth of Firefox has skyrocketed, statistics on home ground are even more encouraging, OneStat ranking Mozilla with a 15.82% of the US browser market while IE is down to 79.78%.
