This week, Microsoft made available for download a new series of security updates to fix various issues that were found to affect its products.

Among them, there was one update specifically targeted at Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, aimed at resolving two vulnerabilities in the software.

“The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer,” Microsoft explained.

“An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.”

The July 2012 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer that was pushed to users through the Windows Update service brought along version 9.0.8 of IE, the Redmond-based software giant also announced.

For those who missed our previous report on the July 2012 security update from Microsoft, we should note that the bulletin for Internet Explorer was rated critical for IE9 on Windows clients (Windows 7 and Vista). For IE9 on Windows Servers (Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2), it was deemed Moderate.

“Most customers have enabled automatic updating and do not need to take any action. We recommend that customers, who have not enabled automatic updating, enable it (Start Menu, type ‘Windows Update’),” Tyson Storey, Program Manager, Internet Explorer, notes in a blog post.

“We recommend that administrators, enterprise installations, and end users who want to install this security update manually, apply the update immediately using update management software or by checking for updates using the Microsoft Update service.”

Those of you who would like to learn more on the security update that Microsoft delivered for Internet Explorer 9 should head over to this page on the company’s Security TechCenter.
