Internet Explorer 11, the latest version of Microsoft’s in-house browser that arrived on the market in October together with Windows 8.1, is on track to become the top browser worldwide, as its usage skyrocketed in the last couple of months.

Market researcher Net Applications revealed that IE11 is currently installed on 10.42 percent of desktop computers worldwide, which is enough to make it the fourth top browser out there.

While IE8 continues to lead the charts with 20.64 percent, IE11 has moved closer to IE10, the third app in the rankings with 11.05 percent.

If the same growing trend is maintained in the next 30 days, Internet Explorer 11 has all the chances in the world to take over the runner-up seat in these charts. Of course, IE11 could also take over the leading spot as well if everything goes according to the plan and more users make the move to the modern OS.

Internet Explorer 11 is currently the default browser in Windows 8.1, but is also available as a separate download for Windows 7 users, being shipped through the built-in Windows Update tool.

Microsoft claims that Internet Explorer 11 is the most secure and the fastest browser to date, as its technologies make it much superior to all its rivals currently on the market.

“Internet Explorer 11 advances the performance leadership of our JavaScript engine, Chakra, while ensuring compatibility, interoperability, and security,” Microsoft said back in September when it officially launched a preview version of IE11 for Windows 7 users.

“As we improve performance for real-world sites, IE11’s JavaScript performance on benchmarks like WebKit SunSpider continues to lead compared with latest version of other browsers. On Windows 7, IE11 Release Preview is 9% faster than IE10, which is a 5% improvement from the IE11 Developer Preview, and over 30% faster than the nearest competitive browser.”
