This June 5 marks the celebration of the International Environment Day, also known as World Environment Day.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, for short) explains that, given the impact that climate change and global warming have on agricultural practices worldwide, it has decided that this year's theme for the World Environment Day should be Think.Eat.Save.

What UNEP wants is to get people to take a moment and think about the importance of not wasting food.

“The aim is to encourage you to reduce your foodprint by becoming more aware of the environmental impact of food waste and loss across the food supply chain.”

“The theme emboldens you to take action from your home and then witness the power of the collective decisions you and others have made to reduce food waste, save money and minimise environmental impacts,” it writes on its website.

Themes for World Environment Days celebrated in the past included caring for forests, looking after the ozone layer, deforestation and sustainable development.

The decision to start celebrating the International Environment Day was taken after the 1972 Stockholm Conference, when high officials from various countries around the world gathered to discuss environmental-protection issues for the first time.

To mark the event, people in all corners of the world are taking part in street rallies, bicycle parades, eco-friendly concerts and several other green-oriented activities.

“By celebrating World Environment Day, we remind ourselves and others of the importance of caring for our environment. Remember that every action counts, so join us: every year, everywhere, everyone!” UNEP points out.
