From now on, accessing wireless networks will be much easier through the WiMax technology proposed by Intel.

This solution is considered a method of spreading broadband Internet over cities, rural areas and countries where the number of Internet surfers is low. WiMax-ul is considered by specialists the successor of today's cellular telephony. Intel is hoping that once this chip is launched, the industry will make a leap similar to the Centrino platform.

WiMax, abbreviation for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a wireless solution built around the standards of this industry, which ensures connectivity through the wireless high speed networks for home users or corporations.

"WiMax is able to supply the platform for the next generation Internet, connecting the next billion Internet users" said Scott Richardson, General Manager of Intel's Broadband Wireless Division. "Aside from launching on the market the first system-on-chip flexible WiMax, Intel is collaborating with several companies, among which carriers and equipment producers, to prepare the next wave of wireless technology.

The Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband device, previously code named "Rosedale", is based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard and guarantees providers and end users that equipments purchased from different producers will work together. WiMAX solutions allow the creation of high speed fixed wireless broadband networks which ensure the Internet connectivity, Internet Protocol (IP) and TDM Voice capabilities, as well as high speed real-time IP-based video.

Among the operators collaborating with Intel to obtain a large dimension WiMax ecosystem we mention: AT&T, Altitude Telecom, BT, Brasil Telecom, ETB, Iberbanda, Millicom, Qwest, Speakeasy, Telmex, TowerStream, UHT.
