As Paul Otellini said, Intel will launch next new processors models that will be specifically designed to have a low power consumption rate. Intel aims at incorporating some of the technologies used in Pentium M processors in server and desktop CPUs.

Otellini exemplified the benefits of the new Intel processors by computing that if at this point there were 100 million PCs, the energy savings would amount to $1 billion world wide. Moreover, the new processors will be dual core, a feature which will increase performances.

Otellini believes that one of the drawbacks of the GHz race is that companies are making now models which require more and more power, leading to overheating. The new processors will allow producers to design new, thinner and lighter desktop models and of course new notebook models.

The Intel processors, having code names like Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest, are scheduled for the second half of 2006, and have power consumption rates of 5, 65 and 80 watts. The most interesting of them is the 5 watt processor, which will allow the designing of portable computers no bigger than the hand.

Woodcrest will be followed by another model, Whitfield, scheduled for 2007, which will incorporate 4 cores.

Intel's orientation towards the mobile sector is also determined by the fact that mobile processors have recorded the most significant sales increases. Moreover, Intel has also taken into account the producers' demands for processors with lower power consumption rates.
