After Advanced Micro Devices officially announced their intention of building a triple cored central processing unit which is intended to close the gap in both performance and price between the dual and quad core desktop architectures, Intel said that it will pursue the very same goal.

According to the news site fudzilla, there are some rumors among the hardware manufacturing companies that Intel plans to take the very same road like AMD and design, build and market their own triple core central processing unit. While AMD already announced that their new CPU will hit the market in the first month
of 2008 it is unknown when Intel will have a complete product, ready for market.

With the three core processing units Intel plans to follow AMD and use those products as a bridge between the dual and quad core platforms in both terms of price and performance. While for AMD it is very easy to disable one of the processing cores from its quad core processors and end up with a three cored product thanks to its Direct Connect architecture, Intel must take a different road as its quad core processors are in fact two dual-cored CPUs placed on single silicon die. This may provide AMD with the respite it needs in order to enjoy some months of leading an entire market segment and ramp up some revenues.

Returning from three cored processors' land, Intel plans a number of other products as well including the Larrabee, which is intended as a workstation and professional chip initially, as that market segment is far from covered and it could generate some serious revenues. After the workstation version which will hit the market sometime in 2008, Larrabee will also come as a gaming platform and it will be scaled to cover the entire performance range going from entry level solutions that are suited for office use and reaching to gaming machines.

Intel also prepares a new desktop processor range based on the Yorkfeld and Harpertown core architectures which will come with some great overclocking potential as the new Penryn CPUs will be able to jump right over the 4GHz mark. Even now, Intel processors from the QX6850 line that run at a standard 3GHz are able to reach 3.6GHz, but the Penryns as they will come based on the 45nm fabrication process will be able to clock higher than that without any additional heat build up. While it is almost certain that Intel's desktop intended quad cores will reach 4GHz, they will most likely stay there as well as the manufacturing company also has plans for a faster chip family, Nehalem, that is said to come out in 2008.
