Motorola is the new king on the WiMax block; the two companies signed an agreement to jointly promote developing and adopting WiMax as a new alternative for mobile broadband.
The number of allies Intel has signed with for this cause is growing and only big names are invited to this party.
Besides Motorola, Fujitsu and Nokia have
also signed agreements with Intel on the WiMax issue. Nokia and Intel are members of the WiMAX forum, which is an industry-led non-profit corporation formed to promote and certify compatibility and interoperability of WiMAX.
The specifications for the 802.16e standard still need to be approved by the forum, which is expected to happen late this year. The mobile version of WiMAX can be built into mobile devices such as those made by Nokia, alongside the cellphone chipsets.
Motorola and Intel have been working separately on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.16e standard, but now the two companies plan to work together and push the standard forward. Motorola has also stated that there are no binds on this agreement that force the company to use only Intel chips in its terminals.
