Since there is still some time left until the forth quarter of 2011 when Intel is expected to replace its mid-class server processor offerings with new CPUs based on the Sandy Bridge-EX architecture, the company has decided to refresh one more time its 5600 processor series, the new parts being scheduled to arrive on February 14.

The refresh is made up of five high performance models and five standard-powered CPUs, the models featuring from four to six computing cores.

All the E5600 series models carry a 80W TDP and range in speed from 1.6GHz, for the entry level Xeon E5603, to 2.53GHz for the top of the line Xeon E5649.

The number of cores as well as Hyper-Threading support and the amount of L3 cache installed varies according to the model chosen.

Moving to the X5600 series, the number of cores also varies, but, this time, all the CPUs support HyperThreading, come with a full 12MB of L3 cache and have frequencies ranging from 2.93GHz to 3.6GHz.

The less powerful parts have a TDP of 95W, while faster processors are rated at 130W, while the top of the line Xeon X5690 which packs six-cores and runs at 3.46GHz has a TDP of 139W.

Together with these E5600 and X5600 CPU models, Intel also plans to introduce the Xeon W3690, a six-core, 12-thread part that packs 12MB of L3 cache, runs at 3.46GHz and carries a 130W TDP.

All the processors are built using the 32nm manufacturing process, integrate a tri-channel memory controller, support Turbo Boost, AES and other Intel technologies and are compatible with LGA 1366 motherboards.

The chips will be available in various servers built by Fujitsu and IBM/Lenovo, more manufacturers following to announce such solutions soon.

The Xeon 5600 family is going to be replaced in the fourth quarter of 2011 with new E5-2600 series processors that are built on top of the Sandy Bridge-EX architecture and are compatible with LGA-2011 motherboards. (via CPU-World)
