Chip maker Intel is getting ready for the launch of 64-bit Android-based smartphones, and it has already announced that a version of the operating system that will offer support for them has been completed.

The company has confirmed at CES 2014 in Las Vegas last week that a new kernel version for the Android 4.4 KitKat OS has been developed, with support for 64-bit compute capabilities.

Basically, this OS flavor will be loaded on smartphones and slates that are based on Intel’s Atom CPUs, while also offering better performance capabilities courtesy of the 64-bit processing technology.

The aforementioned 64-bit iteration of Android will be loaded on smartphones powered by the “Merrifield” application processor that packs Silvermont cores and the 22nm process technology, xbitlabs unveils.

However, users looking to grab one of these phones should not hold their breath for that. These smartphones are expected to arrive on shelves only in the second half of the next year.
