Early benchmarks start to surface

Intel's Core i5 Lynnfield processor will be one of the company's first mainstream CPUs to be compatible with the upcoming LGA1156 socket. Although this new series is slated for debut sometime in September 2009, it appears that the very first pictures and benchmarks of the products have already invaded the Internet. According to some early benchmarks of the new processors, the 2.66GHz Lynnfield Core i5 will be slightly better than AMD's Phenom II X4 940, which runs at a higher core speed of 3GHz.

 

The performance details of Intel's next-generation Core i5 processors have been made public in a recent post on the Xfastest forum, which also offers details about the performance of the Lynnfield Core i5 CPU, slated for debut in mid September 2009, including the 3DMark Vantage score and the results from the suite of CPU tests in Everest Ultimate Edition. According to the screenshots of the results, the Core i5 processor, clocked at 2.66GHz works slightly better than AMD's Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition CPU, which is clocked 3GHz.

 

Except for the CPU PhotoWorxx test, where the Deneb quad-core scores higher than Intel's yet unofficial Core i5 part, the Core i5 manages to provide better numbers. However, the performance differences aren't that high, which means that AMD will still have something to compete with against the upcoming wave of next-generation Intel processors. In addition, the Sunnyvale, California-based CPU maker is also expected to update its processor lineup, with the introduction of new quad-core models, like the Phenom II X4 945.

 

The benchmarks were done on an Intel-designed motherboard, but we are expecting more of these socket LGA 1156 motherboards to be showcased during Computex, which is now just days away from debut. By the time Intel will officially take the wraps off its Core i5 processors, we should already have a general view of what to expect.
