Intel has long been looking for a way to make a serious incursion into the smartphone business, and it seems its most recent acquisition may help it in that regard, meaning that ARM may have a fight on its hands.

ARM has been the more or less undisputed supplier of mobile processors for quite a few years already, while Intel had been dominating the PC processor market.

Both parties are now trying to take away some of the other's territory, and with ARM's SoC proving formidable on the tablet market, Intel figured it would try something similar on the smartphone field.

As such, it has been going through the proceedings to acquire Infineon, and the acquisition seems to have finally been completed.

Infineon Technologies AG Wireless Solutions (WLS) will become part of the Santa Clara, California-based corporation, under the new name of Intel Mobile Communications (IMC).

It will continue to supply wireless and cellular platforms to worldwide customers, while also combining its IP with Intel's, for the making of always-connected smart TV, tablet, smartphone, car and laptop platforms, among other things.

“As computing spreads across a range of connected devices, including new categories being created almost daily, we must be ready to support the next billion devices across multiple networks with smart, secure and seamless computing experiences,” said Dadi Perlmutter, Intel executive vice president and co-general manager of the Intel Architecture Group.

“The acquisition brings to Intel a world-class wireless portfolio and a proven track record in cellular communications, combined with our existing strength in computing positions us well for future growth.”

“With the projected growth of mobile computing and its convergence with wireless device market segments, it is our intent to rapidly apply Intel’s resources and assets to further grow our wireless business and move Intel Mobile Communications into a leadership position,” said Prof. Dr. Hermann Eul, president of Intel Mobile Communications.

“As we enter an era of multi-communication solutions, IMC’s products and technologies will be integral to connecting a breadth of Intel and ARM-based mobile devices. We are truly excited to be a part of this growth.”
