Any non-Z chipset should not allow CPU tweaking, and that's final

I haven't mentioned it before, mostly because I didn't want to be part of the reason why Intel did what it just did, but motherboards based on the Intel B85 Express and H87 Express chipsets shouldn't allow for CPU overclocking.

Which is to say, Intel CPUs with the K suffix, like the Core i7-4770K and i5-4670K, should only be overclockable on mainboards designed with Zxx Express chipsets, and maybe Xxx chipsets.

Yet mainboard manufacturers have been offering BIOS updates for B85 and H87. They want to take advantage of the price difference.

While Zxx and Xxx chipsets cost $35-$45 (€27-€34), the Bxx and Hxx ship for $25-$35 (€19-€37).

Having overclocking support on those platforms would mean more customers for them but less for Intel's high-end hardware.

Obviously, Intel doesn't like this, so it has decided to create a CPU microcode update that prevents K CPUs from overclocking on any chipset other than Z87. It's not complete yet, but it will be soon.

No longer can mainboard makers save on manufacturing costs, since Intel will order them to include the codes in their BIOS updates. Alas.
