Even though it once said this would never happen, the tune has changed

It looks like even a gargantuan company like Intel can't really stand against the tide forever, especially when all its competitors add their force to it.

Thus, despite saying, repeatedly in the past, that it would never make CPUs out of any architecture besides x86, Intel is now getting ready to produce ARM chips.

Or rather, the company's partner Altera announced that Intel would start making ARM's 64-bit silicon at its foundries starting in 2014, Forbes reports.

It sounds truly surprising indeed, knowing how vehemently Intel has been trying to deflect ARM's incursions into the PC and server CPU markets, while also attempting to steal some of its rival's mobile market share.

Alas, with the increasingly small and efficient Atoms still falling short of SoCs from Qualcomm and NVIDIA, there isn't much choice but to try and use the same tools.

The only thing left is for Intel to start offering foundry services like TSMC and Globalfoundries (accept orders for custom chips instead of only making its own).
