At the Intel Developer Forum in Taiwan, the leading Santa Clara-based chipmaker demonstrated its Core 2 Quad QX9300 Extreme Edition processor, a product the company seems to be very proud of, given the show off it made. The new CPU comes with a stock clock of 2.53GHz and a 1,066MHz bus. Also, it features a nice 2MB L2 cache that is shared between its four cores.

The company put on display a few notebooks powered up by this piece of equipment, and demonstrated its great overclocking capabilities. From 2.53GHz, the QX9300 Extreme Edition CPU can easily have its all four cores running at 3.55GHz. The company showcased a system with the chip boosted to this speed, and managed to register a 3DMark Vantage score of P11139 while running with a CrossFireX setup. Intel planned to design a chip that would meet the needs of an extreme gaming notebook, and it demonstrated that it managed to do so with this CPU.

Yet, this is not all about the Core 2 Quad QX9300 Extreme Edition chip, the company says. If a proper cooling system is used, the core speed of this microprocessor can be easily leveraged to 3.7GHz, and we have to say that this is a rather astonishing overclock for a mobile PC CPU. Enthusiasts will surely think about the characteristics of this chip from now on, as it will undoubtedly prove a great purchase for any gaming laptop.

Users on a budget will only be able to dream about Intel's Core 2 Quad QX9300 Extreme Edition, as the processor itself will be greatly expensive, and not all can afford it. Also, given its capabilities and the additional cooling it would require to make a strong overclock, the chip will probably be featured only by 17-inch or higher notebooks. And they're not too cheap either. Still, high-definition multimedia enthusiasts, gamers and power-users will consider acquiring such a piece of engineering.

Your not the only one, I have a maxxed out Alienware M17x too with the QX9300, keeps giving blue screens at any attempt to overclock and really poor performance at stock, Tech support have no solutions. Expensive desktop led lightshow at the moment......
