VirusBarrier X6 version 10.6.6 is now available for Macintosh users running Mac OS X 10.5 or Mac OS X 10.6, Intego has confirmed. Updated just yesterday, the new version doesn’t ship with a list of changes, with Intego posting the same changelog for this version, as it did for 10.6.5. However, since this is security software, users are likely required to update.

Although Intego doesn’t usually forget to post an official announcement whenever it updates the flagship VirusBarrier security software for Mac, this time around the company’s press room features an announcement related to its Mac security blog. Previously, the company had announced the release of VirusBarrier X6 10.6.5, a free maintenance update to its anti-malware and network protection tool. The security firm revealed in April that, in addition to improving performance and reliability, VirusBarrier X6 would scan iPads for malware and malicious files. The same goes for VirusBarrier X6 10.6.6, Intego reveals on its website.

Listed below is the actual changelog for the latest version of the software (to be noted that it is identical to that of VirusBarrier X6 10.6.5).

“In addition to iPad compatibility, VirusBarrier X6 adds the following features:

“- A new option allows users to submit URLs that are flagged as web threats or phishing sites to Intego for analysis; - A contextual menu in the log allows users to add sites flagged as web threats or phishing sites to the Trusted Sites list; - A button in the web threat and phishing alerts allows users to add sites to the Trusted Sites list; - A button in the behavioral analysis alert allows users to trust an application; - An “Always require a password to access the interface” checkbox has been added to the advanced preferences; - A new advanced scan option allows users to skip Boot Camp volumes during malware scans; Minor bug corrections and performance enhancements.”

As usual, existing customers can update to the new version for free, while newcomers must fork out some 60 bucks for a user license.

As far as Intego’s Mac Security Blog is concerned, the security firm says that, “It has no ads, offers an RSS feed, a powerful search function, and a tag cloud to find the most popular topics.” As you would expect, discoveries of new malware and threats to Mac users are the key topics on the Intego blog, in addition to Apple security updates, updates to popular third-party software, and more. “Mac users who want to be the first to find out about security issues affecting Mac OS X recognize that it is the only blog of its type,” Intego claims.
