Intego has announced the availability of a new version of Personal Antispam, an intelligent spam filtering program. Adding compatibility for Microsoft Outlook 2011, the e-mail client included with some versions of Office 2011 for Mac, Personal Antispam 10.6.5 also provides spam-filtering support for Apple’s own Mail.app, Microsoft Entourage (v. X, 2004 and 2008) and Microsoft Outlook 2011, the software security vendor said.

Sold as part of Intego Internet Security Barrier X6, a powerful security suite from Intego, Personal Antispam is described as the ultimate spam-fighting tool for Mac OS X.

According to its makers, Personal Antispam 10.6 is able to quickly analyze incoming e-mails, determining which messages are spam and which are valid messages.

To achieve this, the app checks what Intego calls “whitelists” and “blacklists” of addresses, message headers, content or layout, URLs in messages, and much more.

Intego weighs in on the matter, saying “Spam is the scourge of the Internet. Almost every Internet user receives spam: undesired e-mail messages selling products and services, messages suggesting that users visit certain web sites, often pornographic, and scams of all kinds.”

“Some people get so much spam that they spend more time sorting their inboxes than they do reading legitimate e-mail; it is not uncommon to receive hundreds of spam messages each day, for only a few dozen legitimate e-mail messages,” the company adds.

Personal Antispam 10.6.5 system requirements include Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard, either an Intel- or PPC-based Mac (Universal Binary), Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage (v. X, 2004 and 2008) or Microsoft Outlook 2011.

Personal Antispam 10.6.5 is a free upgrade for all registered users of Personal Antispam 10.6 or later, Intego claims. The upgrade is available via Intego NetUpdate.
