Security vendor Intego has posted two announcements on its official web site, both of which concern Mac users looking to work in a secure environment, whether at home, or at work.

The Austin, Texas-based company today announced an update to its VirusBarrier Express Mac antivirus and anti-malware program.

A free download for anyone running Mac OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard, VirusBarrier Express is the first antivirus and anti-malware program available from the Mac App Store.

According to its makers, the app has been downloaded nearly 1 million times since its release.

Intego has released version 1.1 of VirusBarrier Express with the purpose of improving and simplifying the program’s malware definition update system.

Thanks to some rewriting of its code, Mac malware definitions are now free, and are updated at least once a month.

In the case of new, more serious malware, definition updating will occur even more often. Users can easily update the definitions by clicking a button.

Intego also released VirusBarrier Plus today, an all new product for the Mac install base.

Also a Mac antivirus and anti-malware program sold exclusively through the Mac App Store, VirusBarrier Plus offers protection from both Mac and Windows malware.

It looks for and eradicates other types of malware, malicious scripts, and more.

VirusBarrier Plus will be available at a special introductory price of $7.99 for two-weeks. When the promotional period ends, the price will be $9.99.

VirusBarrier Plus is localized in English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, and requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard.

As with the free (Express) version, VirusBarrier Plus requires that users have an Apple ID to download it from the Mac App Store.
