Liberty Mutual doesn't want to pick up the tab for the lawsuits against Schnucks

Earlier this year, supermarket chain Schnucks was targeted by hackers. The details of 2.4 million payment cards have been stolen as a result of the breach.

In July, the Missouri Attorney General determined that the company didn’t violate any data security laws. However, that didn’t prevented unhappy customers from filing lawsuits against Schnucks.

A total of eight lawsuits have been filed, and now even Schnucks’ insurance company, Liberty Mutual, is suing them.

According to KTVI, Liberty Mutual wants to make sure that it will not have to pay damages in the lawsuits filed against the supermarket chain.

The insurer argues that its coverage only applies to bodily injury and property damage. In the suit filed earlier this month, Liberty Mutual claims that the electronic data stolen by hackers doesn’t constitute “tangible property.”

On the other hand, Schnucks says it’s disappointed by the insurance company’s move, and it hopes that Liberty Mutual will honor its commitment.
