It appears that installing Internet Explorer 9 on top of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is not always a smooth experience.

Microsoft has confirmed an issue in which IE9 deployed on Windows 7 can break the Calendar gadget.

The Redmond company published KB 2584532 detailing the issue earlier this month, but the knowledge base article was subsequently pulled.

In all fairness, it wasn’t all that helpful to users in the first place, since all it did was detail the problem, and nothing more beyond that.

“Consider the following scenario. After installing Internet Explorer 9 on a Windows 7 SP1 machine, when you try to add a Calendar gadget on the desktop, the Calendar gadget can be added successfully but might not be displayed properly. When the problem occurs, the Calendar gadget might be shown as completely blank,” the software giant said.

KB 2584532 is bound not to be missed, due to its short life and the fact that no fix or workaround was offered by the Redmond company.

Still, customers affected by the issue described in this article can turn to another KB article on Microsoft Support for help.

Attempting to navigate to KB 2584532 at this point in time will redirect users to KB 2515657, which is titled: “Windows 7 Gadgets may not work or display properly.”

Here is the description of KB 2515657 which appears to also cover the problem detailed in KB 2584532:

“Windows 7 Gadgets may stop working and may not display properly, Gadgets may appear as black squares, may appear to have vertical green lines down the center or may not appear at all and may have a blue exclamation marks next to it, or calendar gadget may display as an orange background without dates. This problem occurs even if you tried the following troubleshooting steps: System Restore, UAC is ON, CMD Scannow,” the Redmond company said.

According to Microsoft, Internet Security Zones incorrect settings are causing the gadget issues in Windows 7, including the IE9 – Windows 7 SP1 calendar gadget glitch.
