Apple has released its annual iTunes and App Store Rewind and named Instagram the iPhone app of 2011. iTunes Rewind features the best apps, music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and books of the respective year.

The awards reflect not only user votes, but also staff-picks from Apple’s own review board.

Commenting on awarding Instagram the title of ‘iPhone App of the Year’, Apple said that that it was the "definitive photo-sharing app" of 2011. "The beautiful filtered effects, including tilt-shift, make it near-impossible to take a bad shot," the company added.

Instagram is a fun and simple way to shoot and share beautiful photos on your iPhone. It allows you to apply several filtered effects, as well as to tilt-shift blur and make your stills look like professional shots.

“Transform everyday moments into works of art you'll want to share with friends and family,” reads the description by Burbn Inc., the developers of Instagram.

Using the app, you can also follow your friends' photos and each time you launch it, new photos are served up from your closest friends, or the creative people from around the world that you choose to follow yourself.

Moving on to Apple’s Game of the Year, Tiny Tower is an “addictive app taps our inner Donald Trump,” Apple said, “as we grow an economic empire by building towers and populating them with businesses and bitizens. We find its marriage of tune nabafenebt and social gameplay irresistible.”

The two winners also feature video demonstrations that make you rush to the App Store and download them in a jiffy. The Instagram video is truly breathtaking, as I’m sure many of you will agree.
