Instagram is having some technical difficulties today

Instagram is down and the world is crumbling! Well, not really, but there are plenty of people complaining online.

The photo service that was acquired by Facebook a few years ago seems to be facing some technical difficulties today, as both the website and the mobile app appear to be down at the time of writing.

When trying to visit the web-based Instagram version, you’ll notice the “500 Internal Server Error” notification. This means that the web server running Instagram has encountered an unexpected condition that prevents it from fulfilling the request by the client.

Unfortunately, the code doesn’t reveal the cause of the issues, but it’s rather an umbrella error generated by the Web server when it knows that something has gone wrong, but can’t be more specific about the error’s nature.

Twitter is getting flooded by people complaining about Instagram being down, some of them going as far as to post to the microblogging platform the pictures they can’t post on the photo service. Others are complaining, maybe jokingly, that they won’t be able to share just how yummy their food looks like now or that they can’t use the Throwback Thursday #tbt hashtag.

The issue seems to be getting reported from all corners of the world, indicating that the issues are quite widespread. The company’s engineers are probably already working to solve the issue, so it will hopefully not take very long before the world is back to order.

We’ll update as soon as we know more.

[Update] The service seems to be back on track. Both the website and the app are in working order, even though there are still people complaining that they’re encountering issues with loading time.

For the most part, however, the service is back up again, much to everyone’s pleasure. Sites that are specialized in keeping track of big Internet tools report that Instagram is working without a hitch, which means that those who are still complaining might need to clear their cache or to restart the app, if they’re on their mobile devices.

Even though Instagram is hosted on Facebook’s servers for a long while now, there were no issues registered with the world’s largest social network, which is, of course, a good thing since the world would have melted if it had, like it usually does when Facebook goes down.

Hopefully, next time around, people won’t call the cops when it does stop working.
