Secunia Software Inspector will crawl an operating system and the installed software and will produce an evaluation highlighting insecure program versions and missing security
updates. Although Secunia does not deliver support for Windows Vista yet, it does support Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 2003 and Internet Explorer 6.x, Opera 9.x, or Firefox 1.5.x. Secunia Software Inspector is an online service designed to run via the browser. It only requires Sun Java JRE 1.5.0_06 and the latest version of Microsoft Windows Update.

The Secunia Software Inspector analyzes the operating system and detects security risks associated with insecure versions of the installed applications. It also checks for presence of the latest Microsoft security updates. And, in the end, it delivers assistance in updating the system and applications.

"The Secunia Software Inspector relies on carefully crafted "Secunia File Signatures" to recognise applications on your system. The detected applications are then matched against our "Secunia Advisory Intelligence" to determine whether an application is up-to-date or not. The results are then used to advise you on how to update to more secure releases of the insecure applications. Microsoft Windows Update is used to determine if your system is missing security updates from Microsoft," revealed Secunia.

A basic inspection takes just 17 seconds and the Secunia Software Inspector covers: Internet browsers, Internet browser plugins, instant messaging clients, email clients, media players and operating systems. "The Secunia Software Inspector will inspect your operating system and software for insecure versions and missing security updates. A normal inspection lasts 5-40 seconds, while a thorough inspection may take several minutes," added Secunia.
