Sunset Overdrive, the new title from developer Insomniac Games, has managed to impress a lot of players with its reveal video and the recently shown cover image, and those who like playing their video games on the PlayStation 4 are a little disappointed that the experience will only be offered on the Xbox One.

The studio has been forced to answer questions from fans who have accused it of being motivated by money coming from Microsoft to create an exclusive title.

According to TotalXbox, Insomniac Games says that the decision to deliver Sunset Overdrive only on the Xbox One was made because the company thought it was the best fit for the kind of game experience it was aiming to create.

At the same time, Microsoft has offered sufficient funding for the team to realize its vision and allow it to control the fate of the new intellectual property in the long term.

Marcus Smith, who is one of the leading developers working on the new title, is quoted as saying that, “It was really important to Ted that we own the IP, so some of the conversations broke down over that. With Microsoft, they just came in very energetic and excited to work with Insomniac, period. And we'd heard some really good things about them and some resources that they would be allowing us to have.”

The leader of Insomniac Games at one point said that he would no longer be willing to create exclusive titles after working only with Sony for a long time on both Ratchet & Clank and then Resistance.

The company adds, by way of James Stevenson, a community manager, that, “We had to partner with the right group that believed in us and the vision of the game, wanted to see that vision came to life, and was OK with us retaining the rights to our creation. In all of those regards, Microsoft has been a terrific partner in making Sunset Overdrive reality.”

The title is supposed to be launched before the end of the year, although a clear date is not yet available.

Insomniac Games says that it will create an experience that makes the apocalypse look fun and that traditional shooter mechanics will be linked to a movement system that emphasizes speed and quick reactions.

The studio wants to attract a wide array of players to Sunset Overdrive and will offer more details about the core mechanics soon.
