After working on franchises like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance for a very long time, the development team at Insomniac Games are now free to explore a whole new game universe with Overstrike, their next game.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Ted Price, who is the chief executive officer of Insomniac, has talked about the advantages of owning the intellectual property they are working on, saying, “For example, we own the intellectual property for Overstrike, which gives us the pull over what it becomes, and gives us the practical ability to leverage it in other areas.

“But it's also an opportunity to start something that the team is really enthusiastic about, because it's a franchise with no baggage, it's starting from scratch, we can take it any direction we want. And that's always a great moment.”

He added, “It's always a difficult moment, too, when you're trying to find out what your new IP is. That's the challenge we've set for ourselves over the year.

“We want to continue to create new IP, and going through that process at the very beginning can be gut-wrenching, because you're making big bets on new stories, new characters and new game mechanics that may be unproven.”

Price says that the team is always worried about how the players will receive their next game and the tweaks they have incorporated.

Insomniac Games is probably best known by players for its Resistance series, which was launched exclusively on PlayStation home consoles.

After the third game was released last year Price has said that the narrative of the universe has reached a logical conclusion, which probably means that no new games using that name will be out for at least some while.

Overstrike is a four-player cooperative experience and will be launched during the summer of this year on the PlayStation 3 but also on the Xbox 360.
