To everybody's surprise Spike Lee's heist movie reached at the top of the B.O charts in its first weekend. Generally considered an art house director, Lee has taken on a new New York story involving a downtown bank robbery.
The $29 million is both director Lee's and star's Denzel Washington highest opening weekend of their careers. Part of the audiences' interest may come from the famous people involved in the movie: Inside Man has one of the most anticipated on screen face-off duos, British star Clive Owen (as the chief evil doer) and Denzel Washington (as the cop who has to manage the best he can the situation). Another Hollywood star involved in the movie is Jodie Foster, as representative of the bank's interests.
The movie has also make good opening weekends abroad, in Germany and the U.K
Previously Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have worked together for the Malcom X biopic. Jodie Foster is again in the center of public attention after the recent Flight Plan come back. Clive Owen is one of Hollywood's best imported assets and his American fan base is growing and growing.
The previous weekend's champion, V for Vendetta has fallen on the second position of the chart and it cashed in less than half the money it did cash in during its first weekend ($12.3 million). The remake of Wes Craven's 1977 cult horror movie The Hills Have Eyes has fallen from the grace of the audience and reached number 7, followed by former number one Eight Below (Disney's canine adventure movie).
The latest awkward interest of movie goers in horror and science fiction movies has pushed the un-remarkable Stay Alive horror flick up to the third position.
The weekend's B.O. is as it follows:
1. Inside Man, $29 million
2. V for Vendetta, $12.3 million
3. Stay Alive, $11.2 million
