Wiki... When you say "Wiki" you automatically think at wikipedia, which is one of the best websites around. There you can find everything you need to know about everything. The main advantage is that everyone can contribute, so everybody can help. According to Wikipedia, the first such software to be called a wiki, WikiWikiWeb, was named by Ward Cunningham. "Wiki Wiki" is a reduplication of "wiki", a Hawaiian-language word for fast. The word wiki is a shorter form of wiki wiki (weekie, weekie). The word is sometimes interpreted as the acronym for "what I know is", which describes the knowledge contribution, storage, and exchange function.

DokuWiki is standard compliant, simple to use Wiki, mainly aimed at creating documentation of any kind. It is targeted at developer teams, workgroups and small companies. It has a simple but powerful syntax which makes sure the datafiles remain readable outside the Wiki and eases the creation of structured texts. All data is stored in plain text files - no database is required.

What is great at DokuWiki is its simple syntax and that offers unlimited page revisions. That means that each time a page is changed, a new version is saved and the old one is moved to the attic. Old revisions of the page can be seen just by pressing the Old Revisions button. DokuWiki features a powerful difference viewer (or diff) which makes it easy to spot changes in a document. Recent changes is a special wiki page where you can see what was modified recently. For each page lists the modification time, which user changed it and the edit summary.

For your articles DokuWiki provides an easy way to upload or to embed images and media files. Content can be categorized in namespaces, easily browsable through an automated index. You don't need to create namespaces separately; simply create pages with colons in the namepages. All namespaces used in your pagename that don't already exist will be created by DokuWiki automatically.

To avoid conflicts, DokuWiki can lock pages when they are edited by an user. Lockfiles contain the IP address (or username if available) of the one who edits a page; this means users can not lock pages from themselves. If the lockfiles are older than 15 minutes (you can set the time by yourself), they are automatically removed. When the Preview button is pressed, the age of the lockfile is reset, so if more than 15 minutes for editing is needed just press Preview from time to time. Optionally, you can install a spellchecker.
