Injustice: Gods Among Us, the upcoming fighting game from NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, will receive a comic book series that acts as a prequel for the events in the new title and the first chapter is set to come out today, January 15.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is looking like an impressive fighting game that should attract not only fans of the developer, NetherRealm, but also those who want to see just how some of the most famous heroes and villains from the DC Comics universe will go up against each other.

We already got to admire plenty of screenshots and videos with the game and now IGN confirms that a special prequel comic book series will be released starting today, January 15, and will last until the game is released in April.

The prequel series is set five years before the events of the game and writer Tom Taylor is quite thrilled with what the team at NetherRealm managed to deliver when it came to the actual story of the actual game.

"This really is the most ambitious script I’ve ever seen from a fighting game, and the NetherRealm guys have pulled it off," he said.

"So, the challenge is not ‘how do I make this interesting?’ but how do I complement what these guys have done? How do I too find that perfect balance between emotional, epic storytelling and sudden, irreparable spine removal?"

Taylor also gave a short synopsis of the story in the game but declined to share any other details.

"The Injustice game sees a new world order where heroes are pitted against heroes in a world gone dark. Our series begins five years earlier and shows the torturous, tragic events that lead to this place in time. Basically, our story starts in a very happy place, and then… Nah. It’s a bit too hard to talk about."

The Injustice prequel series will see 10-page chapters be released every week on a Tuesday via the DC Comics app for platforms like iOS, Android, Kindle, Nook, or on the web.

On the last Wednesday of every month, an actual comic book will be printed that collects three chapters.

The Injustice Collector's Edition will also include a special comic with the first six chapters in the series.
